01.11.06	I was appointed as the Inovationsmanager der Raumfahrtinitiative BerlnBrandenburg (network manager for RiBB). RiBB is the network of the Berlin small satellite industry. It was initiated by Prof. Brieß of TU-Berlin, Mr. Scheiding Managing Director of Astro- und Feinwerktechnik Adlershof GmbH and Mr. Steinicke Managing Director of FAV (Berlin Network for transportation system technology), I will be employed at the RiBB for three years starting from the 01.11.2006. I'm very happy about this opportunity to shape the future of small satellite industry in Berlin.
19.10.06	Today I signed my contract for the Exist Seed Programme. Together with my colleagues I will be supported by this programme of the German Federal Ministry of Economics - Co-Funded by the European Social Funds (ESF) to start our Spin Off Company DST at TU-Berlin
16.10.06	I`m back from Spain and Greece. I had two very productive weeks. In Valencia our team had the chance to make many very promising contacts. As outlined in our Businessplan 1m GSD from a microsat is very much requested by the market The Symposium in Patras was also very enlighting. I was able to meet many new and old friends, experience the famous Greek hospitality and to hand over some of my experience and passion in space education to the next generation of students.
01.10.06	Today I fly to Valencia to visit the 57th IAF International Space Congress. Together with my colleagues Mr. Danziger and Mr. Lieder I will search for future customers and partners for the Dobson Space Telescope. From Valencia I will fly directly to Patras where the 1st Hellenic-European Student Space Science and Technology Symposium and the Yes3 workshop will take place.

22.09.06	I`m proud to announce that I won ESA sponsorship for the 1st Hellenic-European Student Space Science and Technology Symposium and the Yes3 workshop.
20.09.06	Today was my diploma examination in the Interdisciplinary Communication. I got a 2.0 (1 = best; 5 = fail) Since this was my last exam I`m now an graduate engineer (German Diplom Ingenieur). In few days I will recieve my official Diploma credentials.

24.07.05	During the last 6 month I was absolutely busy with preparing the participation of the Dobson Space Telescope in the 8th ESA student parabolic flight campaign. It culminated in the parabolic flight last week in Bordeaux. Feeling Zero-G was a marvelous experience!
08.04.05	I participated in the STEC05 in Aalborg. It was very interesting meeting young people interested in space and to discuss about the future of space education and space education projects
05.04.05	I'm very proud to announce that my paper entitled "Dobson Space Telescope - the future of microsat based observation" has been awarded with the first price of the 5th IAA Symposium on small satellites for earth observation.
20.12.04	The Paper for the student competition of the 5th IAA Symposium on Small Satellites for Earth Observation which I wrote in cooperation with my Colleagues Mr. Danziger and Mr. Lieder has reached the final round. I'm very proud to have the chance to present our project at the conference next April. This conference and its student competition was indeed the starting point of the Dobson Space Telescope Project.
17.12.04	Today was the midterm review of our third cooperation project with Prof. Timpe. The 6 students intervied 50 Professors and Assistend Professors of over 20 Institutes at the TU-Berlin to find out the needs of all sources interested in space. It was interesting that despite the plans of the TU-Berlin at the moment no dedicated science network to improve and develop space technologie and the use of application at our University.
16.12.04	I recieved the results of my Studienarbeit. I got a 1,0 (1 = best; 5 = fail)
14.12.04	Two of my articles were published at Astronomie.de The first is about the ICSO conference in Toulouse and the Second is about the STEC conference in Lausanne. I wrote these articles to inform public of what is going on in space business at the moment.
13.12.04	Today was the midterm review of the fourth cooperation project with professor Timpe. I'm very delighted about this work as the students did an excellent job interviewing over 400 Students of our University. I also visited a communication seminar held by Dr. Goeres.
09.12.04	Today was the final presentation of my Studienarbeit. I discussed it with Prof. Briess and his assitant Dr. Kayal.
29.11.04	Today was the final delivery date of my Studienarbeit (masterthesis part I). This work is entitled: "System evaluation of classic solid and foldable optics for microsatellites"
08.11.04	I visited a guest lecture held by Mr. Liepack in the Space Technology lecture of Prof. Briess. Mr. Liepack ist a former student of TU-Berlin and now working for Caltech at the JPL. He is a Systemtechnology expert and reported about past present and future interplanetary probes. He also told us the secret how to get a job at JPL ;-)
19.10.04	together with my colleagues from the Dobson Space Telescope project I started the fith cooperation project with Prof. Timpe. The aim of this project will be the development of a new outreach concept for the space faculty of the TU-Berlin. Key element of this study will be a survey to figure out what the general attitude of students and Professors at the TU-Berlin towards space is. Annother question is why even the studentes of the TU-Berlin do not know that with the TUBSat family our university is an important player in the space field. The Aim is to define a new way to communicate the abilities of the space faculty. 11 students of the TU-Berlin will work independantly on this task as part of their diploma examination.
14.10.04	together with my colleague Mrs. Arloth I started the fourth cooperation project with Prof. Timpe. The aim of this project will be the development of a new concept for research and lessons using the satellites of the TU-Berlin. 5 students of the TU-Berlin will work independantly on this task as part of their diploma examination.
10.10.04	I'm back from Vancouver where I stayed the last week. The 55th IAF congress was a amazing event and I'm very proud that I had the chance to participate. I would like to thank DGLR and ESA for making this possible. At the conference I was joined by my fellow students and good friends of the TU-Berlin. Mrs Arloth, Mr. Danziger and Mrs. Winterfeldt and myself 4 students from Berlin, we were indeed the largest group of German students at the IAF :-) We did our best to represent our university. 3 oral lectures and 3 poster presentations including one poster award for the "most innovative technical design" for Dobson Space Telescope. I'm still very excited and I will do my best to be at the 56th IAF congress in Fukuoka. See you there.
01.10.04	Together with my colleagues Mr Danziger and Mrs. Winterfeldt I participated in the ESA Outreach Programme. First part of this programme was a visit of ESTEC. It was extremely interesting especially the concurrent design facility. It has many similarities with the facility at our university despite beeing much bigger.
30.09.04	Together with my Colleagues Mrs. Arloth, Mr. Danziger and Mr. Ripping I attended the 5th Space Policy Workshop in Leuven Belgium. The discussed Topic was space research and international cooperation.

26.07.04	Today I visited a presentation of a PHD thesis. The subjects were new ways of calculating the global CO2 circuit using Bayesian prediction and remote sensing data.
13.07.04	Today was the final presentation of the second cooperation project with Prof. Timpe. The external study done by an interdisciplinary team of 8 Students was entitled "User profiles and operational concepts for a multi-user university satellite system"
09.07.04	Today I visited the inaugural lecture of Prof. Manzey. He is the new Professor for work and organisation psychology at the TU-Berlin. The lecture was entitled "orbit and back again - psychological aspects of human space exploration"
07.07.04	Today and yesterday was the inauguration for our control centre room. On the first day a man from the GSOC told us how to operate a satellite. At the second day we had the chance to program a sequence for the BIRD satellite and to upload it to the GSOC server. Unfortunately the original sequence was copied back again ;-) but we could watch real-time data from the satellite via the internet. This was part of the "planning and operation of space systems" lecture.
29.06.04	Together with the students from the "planning and operation of space systems" lecture I visited the DLR ground station in Neustrelitz. It was a very exciting trip and I learned much about the operation of a ground station.
28.06.04	Today I'm going to present the Dobson Space Telescope at the AQUARIUS lecture. The speech is entitled: "Well I need 20.000€ or how to manage a student project yourself"
22.06.04	Mr. Diekmann from the ESA ESTEC visited the "planning and operation of space systems" lecture. He told us about the human space exploration program of ESA.
15.05.04	I'm very proud to announce that my project the Dobson Space Telescope was selected in the national pre-competition for sponsored participation in the 34th IAF Studentcompetition. I'm going to Vancouver! See you there :-)
13.05.04	Together with my colleagues I visited the ILA air-show. To see all the aerospace companies and their newest products was really amazing.
06.05.04	Together with my colleagues from the Dobson Space Telescope project I attended two very interesting meetings. The first was with a group o students supervised by Prof Briess. The two students will try to develop a foldable optic for a cubesat. The second meeting was with Mr. Trittelvitz a famous German amateur telescope maker. We discussed the collimating procedure for the Dobson Space Telescope.

26.04.04	together with my colleagues from the Dobson Space Telescope project I started the second cooperation project with Prof. Timpe. The aim of this project will be the definition of a multi user communication system for our future university satellites. The study will be done by 7 external students as part of their diploma examination.
20.04.04	Today I registered for my Research Project. The topic of the project will be the evaluation of the Dobson Space Telscope concept. It will be supervised by Prof. Briess
17.04.04	I'm back from the STEC conference. Spending the time among young students and engineers sharing ideas how to enlarge the space education outreach was an great inspiration to me.
05.04.04	I'm verry proud to announce that the ESA Education Office sponsors my participation in STEC (Student Technology Education Conference) in Lausanne. I will present the Dobson Space Telescope there.
02.04.04	Last week I attended the ICSO (international conference on space optics) in Toulouse. I presented a poster concerning the Dobson Space Telescope project. Participating in the conference was both exciting and very interesting.
01.03.04	Mr. Zelasek invited my colleague Mr. Danziger and me to present our project the Dobson Space Telescope at his company Tele-Optic-Tanneberg. Tele-Optic-Tanneberg is a SME that produces professional and semiprofessional optics for astronomy. I'm very proud to announce that we have won Tele-Optic-Tanneberg as a sponsor for the Dobson Space Telescope Project. Tele-Optic-Tanneberg will provide us with all mirrors needed for the laboratory model.
18.02.04	Today was the final presentation of the semester project CHAVER. Chaver is the name of a Space Tug which was proposed in a phase A study of our university. My task in this project was the design of the sensor system for rendezvous and docking operations. Today was my diploma examination in System Technology. I got a 1.3 (1 = best; 5 = fail)
17.02.04	Today was the final presentation of our cooperation project with Prof. Timpe from the MMS Institute of the TU-Berlin. The students did a survey about "New users for low-cost high resolution satellite based remote sensing". We were very delighted by the results of this work.
11.02.04	On Monday and Tuesday I was on excursion to Munich. The trip was organised by Prof Briess. We visited the GSOC (German Space Operation Center) and EADS Space Transportation in Ottobrun.
04.02.04	I attended the 4th European space policy workshop at KU Leuven (in Belgium). The workshop was entitled with enlarging the space policy debate. Together with my Colleague Mrs. Arloth we represented the student and engineering point of view on this policy debate. I'm very proud that some of my ideas regarding the development of European space policy were published in the brochure "Die deutsch-französische Zusammenarbeit in der Raumfahrt" (the Franco-German cooperation in the space field). This brochure concludes the outcome of a meeting of French and German students during the 54th IAC in Bremen. The meeting was held on the occasion of the celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the Elysseé treaty.
08.01.04	I attended a meeting of Korean and German University educators to discuss about the chances of autonomous student projects. I participated as a representative of the cooperation project of Prof. Timpe from the MMS institute of the TU-Berlin and the Dobson Space Telescope project.
19.11.03	Together with my colleagues Mr. Danziger and Mr. Lieder I visited Astro- und Feinwerktechnik GmbH. We attended a meeting of the engineers of this company to discussed future cooperation during the design and construction of the prototypes.

30.10.03	Together with my colleague Mr. Danziger I presented the Dobson Space Telescope at festivities for 25th annivesary of Sigmund Jähns space flight (first German in Space) at our university. We were very lucky that Mr. Jähn and Mr. Merbold visited our stand. It was very exciting to talk with two astronauts about our project.
25.10.03	I visited OES and Feuerstein observatory in Ebermannstadt (near Bamberg) to present the Dobson Space Telescope Project to our sponsors.
21.10.03	I wrote a article about the IAC. It is published at astronomie.de. Today our project with Prof. Timpe was started. 10 Students will do a study to find new customers for high resolution remote sensing data. This work is done in cooperation with the Dobson Space Telescope project . Our team will provide the technical data for those students.
28.09.03	tomorrow starts the 54th IAC in Bremen. Together with my colleagues, Mr. Danziger and Mr. Lieder from the Dobson Space Telescope project, I'll attend the Outreach Programm of the German DLR and ESA. We will present our project with two posters and a mock-up of a foldable telescope. It is the worlds first optical telescope with deploable strutures and yes it can produce pictutures!
23.09.03	I attended the Indo-German meeting for space activities. This meeting was held in the Indian embassy in Berlin. This event was part of the "Asien Pazifik Wochen" (Asia Pazific weeks).
08.09.03	I was invited to the "3rd european space policy workshop" held at KU Leuven. The organisators attention was drawn on me by my articels in the Green Paper online Forum of the european Commission. See you in Belgium. update: there is a report about this event aviable english / german
15.08.03	I took part in a 5 day communication seminar held by Achim Goeres. The title was "ride the horse backwards - an introduction in paradoxical leadership"
28.07.03	today was my diploma examination in satellites technology. I got a 1.7 (1 = best ; 5 = fail)
17.07.03	Togehther with my colleague Mr. Danziger I visited the Astro- und Feinwerktechnik GmbH. This company produces structures for space application. We discussed the Dobson Space Telescope and won them as science advisors for our project.
14.07.03	today is the final presentation of Aquarius .
25.06.03	I visited a presentation of ESA, DLR and BDLI about career in aerospace business. This event was part of a roadshow to encourage joung german graduates to become employee of ESA
22.06.03	with my last certificates brought to the examination office it will last 4 weeks before I'll get my prediploma. After this I will finally be able to do my exams and write my diploma thesis on the dobson space telescope
14.06.03	Today was this years "long night of science". I was visiting a german/french panel discussion about the future of space exploration and took part in the presentation of the aquarius hot water rocket at the technical university of Berlin

"Mars Attack" Study on a piggy back mission to mars

Abstract:

Modern heavy lift launcher offer secondary payload opportunities for GTO. This is a proposal for a mission that will use the Ariane 5 ASAP to launch a small spacecraft to mars. Mars Attack carries two different propulsion systems. A solid booster to bring the probe to the edge of earth's gravital influence. And an electric propulsion that will take it to mars. The payload is similar to Deep Space 2 (DS2) a piggy back payload that was lost with mars polar lander. The aim of this mission was to find ice/water under the surface of mars. Therefore the payload will penetrate mars surface and take a soil sample. Our team thinks that DS2 is a mission worth beeing repeated. Sending it on a microsatellite would be a solution to do this at humble cost.

Study on corrosion effects in sewage systems

Abstract:

The technical university of Berlin (TUB) and the Stadtwerke Neuruppin (SWN - municipal service) undertook a survey about corrosion and bad smell problems in sewage systems produced by hydrogen sulfide (H2S). A interdisciplinary team of 15 students examined ways to avoid production of H2S.

Problem definition

Organic material that is brought into the sewage systems will be chemically dismantled by bacteria. This happens in two different ways while the sewage water is on its way to the sewage treatment plant. If there is oxigen the bacteria will produce sulfur dioxide (SO2), carbon dioxide (CO2) and water (H2O). These three products don't corrode the sewage system nor smell either but this process ends after the oxigen (O2) is depleted. Under absence of O2 the production of H2S starts. H2S smells badly (addle eggs) and is as toxic as hydrocyanic acid. It is detectable to humans at very low rates of about 0,1ppm and toxic at rates greater than 10ppm. Secondly the H2S is to be dismantled to sulfuric acid (H2SO4) that corrodes the sewage system itself and increases the maintaining fees dramatically.

Outcome:

Due to the high complexity of the problem the main task was to design a benchmark for the different technical solutions offered in the market. Figure I shows the flowchart of this benchmark. The whole study is property of TUB and SWN. If you are interested in a copy please contact

Abstract:

The Aquarius student project consist of three essential parts: the Aquarius hotwater rocket, the testing facility and the X-Ratos. The Aquarius is a two staged sounding rocket with a ceiling of 1.200m. The X-Ratos is a experimental hotwater jump start for the future resuable Spacesystem of ESA the Hopper. Last but not least the testing facility. This was the part that I worked on during the last 2 Semesters. After solving serveral problems with caused malfunctional data it works now fine and is used to "verify the theory". We now achieve 84% of theoretical thrust!

Abstract:

The energy seminar is a interdisziplinary course at the technical university of Berlin. In small groups different enviromental themes are discussed. I choosed the urban gardening project because I wanted to know more about subsistence or self supply. This theme is correlated to my space career with the need for self supply in future space stations and colonies on moon or mars. Due to the theme most of the other participants were much closer related to enviromental business than me and most of them liked to see me as "the enemy tecnocrat". It took us a while before we found to each other but if had to choose again would not miss this. Discussion with non engineers can be challenging and I like challenging tasks most.

Hello traveller, my name is Tom Segert this is my official Homepage. I just recently finished my studies on aerospace engineering at the Technische Universität Berlin. During my studies I focused mainly on project management and payload design especially foldable space optics for microsatellites. Nevertheless I do not forgot about the development of my other abilities. With interdisciplinary projects for example in environmental management I was able to broaden my view and to train my soft skills.

Main Course

After the predeploma I specialised on space engineering. For my Diploma needed another 96 credits. 64 lecture credits including 3 main lectures (with practical exercise or project). Additionally I have done 13 weeks in a company or institution related to space engineering, student research project (8 credits) and writen my diploma thesis (24 credits).

Grammar School

I made my Abitur (the ability to go to university) at the secondary level school "Oranke Gymnasium" in Berlin. I achieved a 2.1 in my Abitur. This was better than 82% of my classmates. The best mark achieved in on my school upon my classmates was a 1.5 . The Berlin average of this year was 2.7 .

Basic studies

I study "Verkehrswesen" (traffic sciences) at the technical university of Berlin. It is similar to mechanical engineering but with a focus on transportation systems.

For my Prediploma I needed 100 credits. 78 had to be done in mandatory courses, 22 are freely electable. Additionally I needed 13 weeks in a company related to traffic sciences.
